There is no way around it. For our staff to be at their best they need to continually learn. The more our staff and doctors know and implement the more successful the practice will perform. I would like you to think for a moment what has been the most helpful book you have read for your own personal or professional development. For me one book that sticks out is "How to Win Friends and Influence People." Dale Carnegie wrote this classic book many years ago but it is still as relevant today as it was then.
Now ask yourself the following:
How many people in your office could benefit from reading one of your favorite books? Everyone.
How many would read your recommended book if you lent it or gave it to them? None.
Therefore, one of the best ways I have found to get staff to read great books which will benefit the practice is to pay them. Staff are always looking for ways to earn extra money and one way is by having a Book Reading Bonus. Here are 5 ways to develop this program at your office.
1. Have a library of books that could benefit everyone from reading them.
2. Offer staff the ability to add new books they have found beneficial to the collection.
3. Require a written report after reading the book.
4. Determine a reasonable Book Reading Bonus such as $20.
5. Offer to take your staff out before or after work for a coffee to discuss what they learned from reading the book and how it can relate to their job.
Keep in mind the more your staff know the better they will serve in the business.
